Competitions are important in the life of photographic societies and they can be a great way to improve your photographic skills by learning from an external judge's comments on the images presented.
Each year, a number of BPS Competitions for prints, projected digital images (PDIs) are held. Entry into the competitions is entirely voluntary. Results for these club competitions for the 2017-18 season are here, and those for the 2016-17 season are here.
From time to time there are club projects to produce a book opr presentation, for example, in 1999 members compiled a Millenium Book and in 2014 they produced a club "My London" book.
Inter-club Competitions with neighbouring South London clubs are held for colour prints, monochrome prints and PDIs and our panels are usually chosen from images seen in the previous year.
The Kent County Photographic Association holds an annual print exhibition. See here for more details.
Each season, four competitions are held for prints and for PDIs (Projected Digital Images). All entries in these competitions are commented on and marked out of 10 by an external judge. Dates of competitions and names of the invited judges are given in the BPS Programme.
In addition to these regular competitions, there are two other competitions, each for panels of 5-9 images on a theme of your choosing, e.g. that tell a story, or are strongly linked or have a progression. These are:
- Dennis Berry competition for sequences of 5-9 PDIs.
- Caithness Bowl competition and Blackbourn Trophy competition for panels of 5-9 prints. One award is for each of Regular (Standard+Intermediate) and Advanced class
The detailed rules for BPS competitions can be found here. They include rules for:

Projected Digital Image competition series
Dennis Berry PDI theme competition
Blackbourn Trophy and Caithness Bowl prints on a theme competition.
The rules for the annual Monochrome Print competition are here.
The photographer retains copyright for all entries.
The following resources may be useful:
Print Labels: Prints entered for our print competition series must have a completed BPS label at the top left on the back of the print. These are available from the Competition Organiser, or they can be printed from the file here.
Preparing Images for Projection: Here are some notes on how to prepare images for PDI competitions in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
For the season's series of print and PDI competitions there are three classes: Standard, Intermediate and Advanced. Judges will usually offer more comments and feedback on Standard Class prints and less for the other classes, with the advanced class usually marked more stringently.
Members choose their class at the beginning of the season. New members would normally choose the Standard Class, those wishing a greater challenge the Intermediate Class and very experienced photographers would choose the Advanced Class.
There is only one class for the Dennis Berry theme competition. There are two classes for the Print theme competition: Regular (Standard + Intermediate) and Advanced.
At the end of each season, trophies are awarded to the winners of the club competitions and Certificates of Merit are awarded to the runners-up. The trophies are:
|Print Cup||For the highest aggregated score in the Standard Class Print Competition.|
|Harry Fairhurst Trophy||For the highest aggregated score in the Advanced Class Print Competition.|
|Curves Trophy||For the highest aggregated score in the Projected Digital Image Competition.|
|Harry Wykes Trophy||For the highest combined print/PDI score.|
|Dennis Berry Trophy||For the winner of the PDI theme competition.|
|Blackbourn Trophy||For the winner of the Advanced Print classimages on a theme competition.|
|Caithness Bowl||For the winner of the Regular Print class images on a theme competition.|
None at present.
The Federation of South London Photographic Societies (FSLPS or SLF) comprises some 14 neighbouring clubs. Each year they organise inter-club colour print, monochrome print and PDI competitions and groups of 4-6 clubs battle out the heats during the season. Usually, some of these heats are held at BPS and allow us to see a range of work from other clubs. In April, near the end of the season, the finals of these are held (FSLPS Finals' Day ).
During these inter-club competitions, some of the best individual images will be awarded Certificates of Merit in recognition. At Finals' Day there are competitions for these certificated images, as well as open competitions for club members to enter too.
The Kent County Photographic Association (KCPA) is a group of some 50 clubs. It organises an inter-club print competition (Ross Cup) each year, an Annual Exhibition, an Audio Visual competition and a PDI open competition. BPS and its members usually participate in these.
In addition, we take part in three friendly competitions each year:
|Chislehurst Cup||A PDI competition of 20 images from each club, between BPS and Greenwood Camera Club, held in April.|
|Larter Cup||A competition between Bromley CC, West Wickham PS and Beckenham PS, for monochrome prints and PDIs, held in April/May.|
|Croydon Centenary Trophy||This is organised by Croydon CC each April and involves 6-8 local clubs competing with PDIs and prints.|
The KCPA Annual Print Exhibition is held from April to June each year. Entry details will be posted here for the 2016-17 exhibition when they become available.
